UNESCO Honors Analog Photography
Great news for all lovers of analog photography! UNESCO has added analog, chemical-based photography to the national list of intangible cultural heritage in Germany. This is a significant step towards recognizing this unique cultural technique that has inspired generations of photographers and visually shaped the world for over 180 years. After intensive work and an application by the German Photographic Council, national recognition has now followed in March 2025, which not only acknowledges the high cultural value of analogue photography, but also promotes its preservation and further development.
Despite the dominance of digital photography, analog technology is experiencing a renaissance – both among professional photographers and a new generation of creative minds who appreciate the tactile experience and unique look of film photography.
As a leading provider of professional scanning software, we are particularly pleased about this recognition. For years, SilverFast has specialized in digitizing analogue photographs and film negatives in the best quality and preserving them for posterity. The inclusion in the cultural heritage directory once again confirms the importance of this medium and underlines the value of analog image archives. Let’s celebrate analog photography together!
