Project description
Millions of dried plants are stored in so called herbariums at botanical gardens across the world. The herbarium of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem holds 3.5 million specimens. 22 million herbarium specimens are administered under scientifically controlled conditions in Germany and worldwide the total can be conservatively estimated at 500 million specimens. Dried plants are glued on to A3 or A4 sheets and will now be made digitally accessible to botanists and biologists.
Solutions shall be developed within the framework of the project for efficient high quality scanning of specimens. As well as selecting technical production working methods, a customized automatic solution needs to be developed, tested and put into practice. |
