Error message "Cannot calibrate scanner" on prescan or scan

SymptomSymptom:
SilverFast displays an error message "Cannot calibrate scanner" when I click on either "Prescan" or "Scan" and doesn't start the scan process.

ProblemProblem:
As a part of the scanner initialisation done before any given scan, a scanner tries to establish what can be measured as the maximum value of light for each CCD element (white-point calibration).

If the part of the scanner used for this is covered or blocked somehow, this calibration might fail.


SolutionSolution:
Please make sure that depending on the scanner manufacturer and model:
  • A cover of the transparency unit is removed for transparency scans.
  • A scanner tray for transparent scanning is completely inserted into the scanner.
  • If no film holders are used, please check with help of the film holders what area of the scanner flatbed must remain uncovered by your images.
