For accurate true Colors – Fully automatic Scanner Calibration with ISO-compliant IT8 Targets
A “Target” is a type of measuring table that calculates the exact color recognition capability of a scanner and identifies the singularities of said scanner. There is ISO standard 12641 for these targets, which has been enhanced by the ISO committee with Part 2 in December 2019.
As part of this committee, LaserSoft Imaging was very closely involved in the drafting and elaboration of this new standard until it has been adopted by the ISO Commission. LaserSoft Imaging is a major contributor to the creation of this new standard, which can be recognized as a milestone for an advanced and more accurate color calibration.
LaserSoft Imaging now provides color calibration targets according to the previous IT8 standard 12641-1 as well as according to the new design 12641-2. LaserSoft Imaging produces its own IT8 target, ensuring the highest precision in target production. All around the world, companies trust the unflinching quality of LaserSoft Imaging targets. The reflective target option generates a color profile for the scanning of “top-view” material, such as photo prints, while the transparent target option generates a color profile for the scanning of translucent film materials, such as slides.
Our IT8 targets are equipped with a barcode that enables automatic scanner calibration: Simply insert the IT8 Target, start the calibration assistant and the appropriate reference data is automatically downloaded and calculated with the calibration measurement data to create the individual scanner profile. It is only this easy with SilverFast, and a European patent (EP 1594301) has been granted for this unique development.
The Advanced Part 2 Targets offer more measuring fields than the Standard Part 1 Targets. Part 1 Targets use intelligent algorithms and important measurement points to calculate a calibration profile, while Part 2 profiles contain significantly more measurement points and Part 2 Targets possess additional measurement fields for dark and pastel color tones. The profiles according to Part 2 thus enable an overall increased accuracy.
Auto IT8 Calibration is incredibly easy to use and I noticed an immediate effect when scanning my color transparencies. Having an accurate color profile for your scanner gives you a better start point for your scans and as we all know the better the start point is the better the final result will look.
Another goody from LaserSoft Imaging are the company-made color targets for an IT8 calibration. These extremely accurate targets are used to bindingly set up a scanner in a color-critical process chain.
So far, I can’t see why anyone serious about scanning with your products, and serious about an ICC scanner profile would not use this newer target, just based on a simple gamut comparison of the two!
The full version with IT8 calibration is magnificent! Color is perfect most every time […] The IT8 calibration with the custom targets is by far my favorite tool. Color correction is a very time consuming characteristic of digital imaging and good scans equal less time in the processing of my images for faithful color rendition.
